As per World Health Organisation (WHO) data near about 800 000 people die by suicide every year. Furthermore, for each suicide, there are more than 20 suicide attempts. This has a ripple effect that impacts on families, friends, colleagues, communities and societies. But we can prevent suicides. Suicidal behavior and thoughts should be considered a psychiatric emergency. We can prevent this at individual, community and national levels.

Whenever we think about suicide or about someone taking his/her life because they are facing a series of emotions and something in which suicide is the only way out. Now-a-days suicide is becoming a serious and fast-growing problem of our society and a word that can change the way of life. If we try to give a definition of suicide maybe we can but it is just a definition, meaning of suicide can vary from person to person such as: a solution, a relief, a cry for help, a shame, the right choice, punishment, mistake, protest, runaway, hopelessness, loneliness, quit and many more.

Suicide is the topic that is not talked about much, while many people tend to avoid it because the people including parents are unaware of the situation of the victim’s condition. Until now there is no public health policy on it. Our society has no interest to discuss both suicide and the mental illness which is indirectly responsible for it.

Warning Signs of Suicide

We can’t see what a person is feeling on the inside, so it isn’t always easy to identify when someone is having suicidal thoughts. Few warning signs of suicide are as follows social withdrawal from family, friends and community, dramatic mood swings, talking about feeling trapped, hopeless or alone, comments or threats about killing or harming themselves, increased use of drugs and alcohol, impulsive, aggressive or reckless behavior, thinking, talking or writing about death, sleeping too much or too little, giving away personal possessions or making a will.

Causes of Suicide

Whenever we try to find out the causes of suicide we get a long list but the causes of suicides do not suddenly arise rather they develop over the years. Most important factor is psycho pathology. Most of the people suffer from a major psychiatric illness such as depression, anxiety disorder, mania depression, border line personality disorder, alcohol abuse, anti-social personality disorder. Risk increases for victims of both depression and alcohol or drug abuse.

Causes of suicide can vary. As from an early age we put great pressure upon youth, in college students and teenager such as succeed pressure, increase in competition for jobs or low levels of job satisfaction, grades, performing well in academics, single parent child getting left out because both parents are working full time, dealing with peer pressure just trying to fit in. Sometimes teens feel that parents are not showing them love and attention. Suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts may occur when an individual feel unable to cope-up with certain situations. Most common situations or life events that might be rooted for suicidal thoughts are grief, financial problem, deaths of loved ones, rejection, broken relationships, incarceration etc. Having a history of being abused or witnessing continuous abuse or a victim of harassment or bullying, being diagnosed with a serious medical condition, such as HIV or cancer, childhood trauma or abuse, family history of suicide, difficulty seeking help or support, lack of access to mental health or substance use treatment, previous suicide attempts are also some of the causes of suicide.

Grief is not always clear and visible but suicidal people show some signs such as; excessive sadness, hopelessness, sleep problems, social withdrawal, self-harm behavior, threatening, impulsive behavior, increase in dependency on any substance. Following a belief system that accepts suicide is a solution to all personal problems.

Effects on Loss survivors, suicide survivors or suicide bereaved

Loss survivors, suicide survivors or suicide bereaved are close family members, friends who lose their loved ones through suicide.  After the loss due to suicide they fall into deep grief or fall into struggle trap in which they never accepted it, they always try to know or understand “why it happened”. After the death of loved ones by suicide make the grief process more challenging such as:

Suicide of loved ones plays a role in trauma for suicide survivors. It may trigger or develop PTSD (Post -traumatic stress disorder), an Anxiety disorder, tendency to avoid talk or memorize anything about the loved ones.

Researches show that loss survivors face a higher social stigma, rejection, shame, blame, guilt than others; Due to this, they isolate them. After the death of loved one’s family has a question “what if”. In that situation extremely self-blame, guilt, shame and overestimate their own contribution and so on may appear.
