Professionals/Psychologist and Psychiatrist in India
There is an increasing demand for mental health professionals in developing and countries like India. The transition between traditional to modern life, generation gap, changes in the family structure, and society are some of the major reasons for different mental health issues in India. It is very difficult to adopt modern and scientific approaches because of the interruption of rituals, traditions, and stigmatized social factors. Therefore the new generation is always in the vulnerable condition of different mental health issues. Parents are under stress due to the poor performance, and behavioral issues of their children and children are under stress as they are always facing several demands from the parents and the society to fulfill. Moral education in our society is gradually disappearing because of the attitude of self-centric and self-fulfilling. The altruistic, sympathetic, and empathetic behaviour of the human being is now in the books only. We know the characteristics of this behavior but we have not nurtured with that training to implement this behaviour for social welfare. We have forgotten that social welfare is the ultimate individual welfare. If we work for the betterment and the purpose of a healthy society, in return, it will pave the individual’s betterment and well-being. Because of the increasing demand and change of the bio-social factors in many developing and developed countries, a huge number of people are facing lots of mental health issues. In this situation the need for mental health professionals specifically the psychologists and psychiatrists are emergent.
The scientific method of career selection and mental health diagnosis and intervention only can be done by the professional psychologist and psychiatrist. In this connection, the awareness about the mental health diagnosis and intervention can be circulated on an urgent basis by the State and Central government to avoid unnecessary hassles in the society. For example, a better and scientific career selection can avoid many more psychological issues of the individual with a great level of job satisfaction and a better quality of life. Similarly, the common stress, anxiety, and depression in school settings among the teachers and students are also accelerating due to the over-demand of society and unhealthy competition. Therefore, the role of the school psychologist to maintain a healthy academic life of the students and teachers are always in demand for every school system.
As the problem is more, there is a huge demand for psychologists and mental health professionals in India. Unfortunately, the numbers are very wretched. In the hospital setting the numbers of mental health professionals are very negligible to treat every day increasing mental health patients and their psychological needs. In the school system, the number of professional psychologists is still in a pitiful condition. The conditions of the de-addiction center are running with a poorly professionally eligible psychologist or without a psychologist. The forensic and criminal setting in India is now under the demand of professional psychologists for rehabilitation and correction purposes. It is very unfortunate to say that, in very few Indian Universities there is the option to learn psychology and a large number of people in India have no knowledge and awareness about the subject psychology and the role of psychologists. So we need to make awareness about the mental health issues to provide timely intervention and to avoid unnecessary cases of suicide, loss of life, prevent the antisocial and unsocial activities in the society and to foster a healthy coping mechanism in each one of us to deal with any type of psycho-social, psycho-physical and psycho-environmental issues. Individuals can be made efficient t by nurturing and augmenting the abilities and potentialities among them. These can be possible through the different skill-based training programs and continuous monitoring of the psychological perturbations following the causes, diagnosis, and planning effective interventions.
